Description
I was looking at some RTP screen-shots with statues in them, and as always, the maker had just desaturated character sprites to get their statues.
I don't think just desaturating sprites makes for nice statues. They look like, well - characters in black and white. Not statues. They still look alive, because they have different gray palettes from the different colors, instead of just one, while a statue made of only one material should only have one palette.
So I decided to put my theory to the test, and make a statue out of a random character from the RTP.
TL;DR:
I WAS BORED, SO I SPENT SOME TIME TESTING A METHOD TO MAKE STATUE SPRITES OUT OF RTP CHARACTERS.
Once I had a pose for my statue, I used the gray palette of the character's armor and switched all the colors for it. I also removed pupils from the eyes, to make the statue look less alive.
I kept the different steps, and compared the end result to a simple desaturated version of the sprite.
Tools:
RPGmaker XP's RTP.
GIMP.
You're welcome to use the pose, the sword or the statue in any non-commercial project, provided you credit me somewhere.
